How To Distinguish Between Different Perfume Types and Strengths

Not all perfumes behave the same way on the skin.

Longevity, projection, intimacy, dry down — they are not accidents.

They are designed.

The “type” of perfume you choose influences how the fragrance moves, lingers, develops… and how you experience it.

Understanding the concentration helps you choose not just a scent — but a scent behaviour.

These concentration types are the same in mainstream perfumes as well as in natural perfumery.

What do “concentrations” actually mean?

Different perfume types are formed by different concentrations of fragrance oils in the bottle.

The higher the concentration, the longer the scent tends to last. And yes, this also influences price.

Natural perfumes follow the very same concentration standards as mainstream perfumery — the difference lies in what the fragrance is actually made from.

In mainstream perfumery, the “fragrance” portion is most often synthetic aroma molecules.

In 100% natural perfumery, the aromatic component is made from pure plant extracts, resins, botanicals and naturals from nature.

Only a portion of your perfume bottle is the fragrant oil — the rest is dilution (alcohol, water, or neutral carrier oil). That is why different perfume types have different behaviours on the skin.

It can be confusing — Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Cologne — what does it all mean, and which should you choose?

Here at Sensoriam, we specialise exclusively in 100% natural perfumes from around the world — so you can explore this world with full ingredient transparency and confidence.

WHY NATURAL PERFUMES ARE DIFFERENT

Most mainstream perfumes never disclose their full ingredient list because under the old “trade secret” rules, they don’t have to.

This might have made sense in the era of alchemical secrecy…but today it means most perfume wearers don’t actually know what they’re spraying onto their skin each day.

At Sensoriam, we believe you deserve the truth, the actual ingredients, the full transparency, the real botanicals — not marketing secrets.

Natural perfumes are made with natural ingredients. Mainstream perfumes are made with majority synthetic ingredients. The concentration levels of fragrance are the same in each category.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is actually in a natural perfume?

Real plant extracts, essential oils, resins and naturally derived materials.  No synthetic fragrance compounds.

Why don’t mainstream perfumes list their ingredients?

Because they legally don’t have to because fragrance is still protected as a “trade secret.”

How long does natural perfume last on the skin?

4–10 hours, depending on concentration and your skin chemistry.

Are natural perfumes better for sensitive people?

Many people find them easier to wear, but sensitivity is personal. Always test patch.

What’s the best way to apply natural perfume for longevity?

Pulse points. Warm areas. And re-apply lightly through the day.

Which is better — Perfume Oils or Eau de Parfum?

Neither; they’re different experiences. Oils are intimate, EDPs project.
