Today, we’re honoured to introduce Steve Sun, the founder behind Biology Fragrances, an award winning small-batched functional fragrance collection.

How did you become interested in natural perfumery? How long has Biology Fragrances been around?
My interest in natural perfumery began from a deeply personal place. After my mother had a stroke, she experienced intense headaches and found relief using Tiger Balm, though she disliked the medicinal scent. That inspired me to create fragrances that could be both healing and beautiful. BIOLOGY started in 2023 with the belief that scent can restore balance and enhance emotional wellbeing.
What or who inspires your work in creating fragrances?
My biggest inspiration is my mother, who taught me resilience and sensitivity. I’m also shaped by my Taiwanese and Chinese upbringing, which taught me to appreciate nature, ritual, and balance, and by my life in Los Angeles, which fuels creativity and freedom. As part of the LGBTQIA community, I’m inspired by authenticity and self-expression. All of these experiences blend into how I create—through emotion, curiosity, and play.
How have your life experiences led you to becoming an entrepreneur and launching your own business?
I spent over a decade creating global brands for Disney, Warner Bros, and Paramount. I learned how to tell stories through products and design. Eventually I wanted to create something personal—something that reflected my values and perspective. BIOLOGY became a way to merge scent, creativity, and wellbeing into one experience.
What was your previous experience in the world of perfume?
I’m a self-taught nose with a background in creative direction and product design. I learned the craft by working closely with chemists and perfumers, studying how natural materials behave, and experimenting until each scent felt emotionally complete.
What is BIOLOGY all about for you?
BIOLOGY is about connection—to self, to mood, and to nature. It’s fragrance as wellness and daily ritual. I like to call it the lip balm of fragrance: portable, functional, and something you actually reach for. It’s also meant to be fun.
What makes your products unique?
We create natural fragrances that don’t smell like everything else. Natural doesn’t mean simple. Each scent has a function—focus, balance, love, energy—and is crafted with performance in mind while staying 100 percent natural, paraben-free, and phthalate-free.
Who is the perfumer you work with or do you create the scents yourself? How did you decide to work with them?
I create all of the core blends myself and work with a lab and chemist to refine performance and consistency. The process is a mix of intuition, creativity, and science.
How do you choose and source your natural ingredients?
I work with trusted partners who value quality, sustainability, and transparency. I choose materials that connect emotionally—sandalwood for grounding, bergamot for brightness, neroli for optimism.
Are there specific regions or suppliers you prefer for certain materials?
Yes. Our sandalwood and vetiver come from India, our bergamot from Italy, and our citrus oils from California. I like knowing where each material comes from and who stands behind it.
How would you describe the character or personality of your fragrances?
They are emotional, transportive, and human. Each one captures a state of mind—Joy, Mystery, Love, Deep, Flow, Stellar, Balance—and helps you shift your mood through scent.

What aspects of your work bring you the most satisfaction or joy?
When people tell me a scent made them feel something—more centered, inspired, or just happy—that’s the best feeling. I also love the creative process itself. Making scent is like play.
Do you have a story or a moment in business so far that you cherish deeply?
Seeing BIOLOGY mentioned in Elle and Cosmopolitan alongside major brands was amazing, but what I cherish most is hearing from customers who say our fragrances helped them through personal moments. That human connection is everything.
What change do you want to see in the world?
More empathy, creativity, and curiosity. I want people to see fragrance as a bridge between cultures and emotions—a way to connect rather than separate.
What challenges do you face in the world of natural perfumery?
Working 100 percent naturally means constant variability and higher costs, but it also means authenticity. It keeps me creative and forces innovation.
What’s your dream for the future?
To make functional fragrance part of everyday life and to grow BIOLOGY into a global brand that stays true to its heart: natural, inclusive, and joyful.
What are the current trends you are seeing in perfumery and in natural perfumery? What impact is AI having in the world of perfumery & what do you think of it?
There’s a growing interest in emotional and purpose-driven scents. People want fragrance that represents how they feel. AI is a fascinating tool for analysis and innovation, but it can’t replace emotion. BIOLOGY has explored AI-assisted blending as a creative experiment, combining technology with human intuition.
When do you wear each of your scents?
Throughout the day. Joy in the morning, Deep at night, Stellar when I need energy. I wear them like I check in with myself.
